An Illinois family has filed a lawsuit claiming that a 2004 fire that destroyed their home and killed a child was caused by a faulty Xbox power cable. There have indeed been fire-related issues with Xbox power cords in the past — in 2005 Microsoft recalled about 14 million of them. There's some confusion as to what kind of Xbox allegedly caused the fire, though — the lawsuit mentions the Xbox 360 but that console wasn't available until the year after the fire occurred.
Here's what Microsoft had to say in response to the suit:
"Microsoft recently learned about this tragic incident that occurred in December 2004," a Microsoft spokesman said in an e-mail. "Our sympathy is with the family. However, we are not aware of any evidence that an XBox caused the fire. Also, the complaint specifically states that an XBox 360 was involved, but this version of the product was unavailable for purchase at that time."
