Certain Windows Live Messenger users can now view their Xbox Live Friends list within Windows Live Messenger. The added functionality allows people using the instant messaging software from Microsoft to see whether their friends are online, and what XBox game they're playing.
The service is currently only available in the US and Japan. Adding this function in other territories is reliant on the Windows Messenger Live team enabling the functionality, so this may be rolled out elsewhere in the future.
